Oregon School Finds Asbestos

As a roof was being repaired at an Oregon elementary school, asbestos was found in the attic of the building. The school has ceased work on the water-damaged roofs, and may have to delay opening for classes.

The roofs of Henley Elementary School in Oregon had been an issue for years. The roof was leaking, causing considerable water damage to the ceilings of classrooms and pushing the repairs almost out of budget. But as work began to repair the faulty roof, asbestos was discovered in the attic of the school, halting all work. The asbestos can be found in almost all parts of the attic at the school, forcing officials to pay for abatement of the asbestos prior to work being resumed.

Last year, the school was accused of putting the students and faculty at risk as poor air quality was found. Mold was discovered in the crawl space under the school, which was cleaned and passed new air tests. The current problem will most likely delay the school’s opening, scheduled for the first week of September, as no part of the buildings is considered safe. Bids for the abatement are being accepted, and the removal of the asbestos should commence within the next month.
