The Michelin site will soon be a cleaner place as the EPA steps in to oversee asbestos and oil cleaning in the area. Residents raised the concern that, if not controlled, the clean up could release asbestos into the area.

Negative pressure will be used at the Michelin site as asbestos is being cleared out, and the EPA will test to assure that no hazardous materials were released into the area. The clean up was started in early June, and is now moving to the critical stage of removing asbestos, a part that could be dangerous. The EPA and Michelin representatives set up a public meeting to inform residents that the 14-week renovations will pose no threat to the area surrounding the buildings.

Already areas that contain asbestos have been prepped for cleaning; oil tanks in the area are also slated for cleaning. Some residents have moved past their fear of asbestos to see the redevelopment as chance for growth in the city. When the cleanup is completed, the area could be used for stores and businesses, revitalizing a lag in the community’s job source. Every effort is being used to make the cleanup as safe and quick as possible.
