A New York property manager has been sentenced to jail over asbestos charges. A Federal Court found him in violation of the Clean Air Act and putting his workers in harms way.

A property manager in Syracuse has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act and putting his workers in harms way. The man worked for East Coast Capital LLC, which bought a building on Water Street. The idea was to renovate and sell the building for a profit, but instead had landed the manager in handcuffs. Knowing that asbestos was present, the property manager arranged for untrained workers to remove the material without telling them of the risk or equipping them with protective equipment.

The workers were then told by the manager to dump the material in dumpsters across Syracuse, making the issue one of public safety. When asbestos is disturbed, it breaks into airborne fibers that can be breathed in. When the fibers are inhaled, they lodge in the lungs and keep them from getting oxygen. Asbestos exposure can also result in emphysema and asbestosis, while mesothelioma, lung cancer from asbestos, is one of the most untreatable forms of cancer.
