After a law suit prompted investigation in Cayuga County, a government building was shut down for asbestos testing. The building will not reopen until the building is found to be safe.
The Board of Elections building in Cayuga County has been shut down after asbestos testing showed evidence of the substance. Cayuga County has had some issues with asbestos over the last month after one of their employees filed suit stating that he was exposed to asbestos while working for the County. He maintains that, due to the negligence of the government, his wife was also exposed to asbestos second hand from his clothing.
Exposure to asbestos can lead to a barrage of medical problems, including emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. Mesothelioma develops after a person breathes in asbestos fibers that become lodged in the lungs. The tissue cannot absorb oxygen, which causes it and the surrounding tissue to die. The victim is often past treatment when the cancer is detected and usually ends up suffocating to death. The couple involved in the lawsuit stated that they were exposed after the county told the worker to improperly dispose of the hazardous substance. The building will remain closed until further testing rules the area safe.
