A college in New Mexico has discovered asbestos in the dorms on their campus. The state university says that living in the dorms is safe, although the presence of asbestos and lead has left some students wondering.
A family housing dorm at New Mexico State University has asbestos and lead present in the building, according to findings. A student that lives in the building with her two daughters is concerned that the paint in the dorms contain lead, and that the flooring tiles are made of asbestos. The university has gone on record that the asbestos is safe, and that the lead paint was disclosed at the time that a rental agreement was signed.
Some students think that the situation is a little more deviant, though. University officials say that no one has ever voiced a concern over the asbestos, though students say that they are afraid to complain for fear of being kicked out of the housing. Asbestos exposure can lead to a collection of medical problems including emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma. If fibrous asbestos is disturbed, the particles can be breathed in over a period of time, causing lung cancer. The condition is often not diagnosed for years, until it is too late to treat.
