Mississippi Asbestos Homes Cleared

Homes that were destroyed in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina posed another kind of threat. Some of the homes contained asbestos, making the ruined homes a health risk.

After Hurricane Katrina blew through Mississippi, the destruction could be seen for miles. But the hurricane left a different concern in her wake; many of the damaged homes in D’Iberville, a coastal city in lower Mississippi, have asbestos in them. The storm stirred up asbestos as it ripped through older homes in the historic area, making the once cozy houses into health hazards.

One company has taken the initiative to commence abatement on the home, making them safe for demolition so the city can begin to recoup. Jay McGraw says that abatement is easy, and can be completed in little time at all. The fact that the homes are still around almost a year after Katrina frustrates him, so much so that he took action. The general contractor is going around to each home identified as containing asbestos and proceeds to remove the toxic material, making the path clear for rebuilding. In order to give residents a head start, McGraw moved his company in for abatement, stating that the extra time it takes to remove the asbestos is worth it.
