A couple in New York has filed the first of what could be many lawsuits against Cayuga County due to asbestos exposure. The suit claims that the couple was exposed to asbestos after the county illegally dumped the material.
This week saw the first round of lawsuits filed by an Auburn, New York couple after they claimed they were exposed to asbestos. The suit states that Cayuga County dumped hazardous material containing asbestos illegally and endangered their lives with the material. The lawsuit is one of what may be many suits, according to the couple’s lawyer. An investigation has been launched to find out if the county did illegally dump asbestos in a near by landfill after removing the potentially toxic substance from a government building in February.
The suit includes damages for personal injury and medical expenses due to the fear of cancer and is centered on the county’s employees and officials. Though the couple has begun the proceedings together, they are filing individually for past and future injuries. The husband claims he was exposed to asbestos over a five-month period while working for the county removing the material, while his wife was exposed due to fibers on his clothing when he returned home. The man feels he was fired from his position when he raised concerns over exposure to the hazardous material.
