School officials were saying that the renovations for a New Jersey high school are extensive, but said nothing about the asbestos hazard that was causing the delay. The findings may keep the school closed for the first half of the school year.
The three schools in district three have all the signs of renovations; vacant class rooms, displaced furniture and hanging wire. But the most noticeable sign is the one that is spelled out, “Danger, Asbestos, Cancer Hazard” hung outside each of the schools. The high school, middle school and elementary school were all under renovation when asbestos was discovered in the main buildings. Work was halted, and officials say that the work needed is still extensive, a word that residents find laughable.
Abatement contracts are being considered for the district prior to construction work being able to resume. The hazard of breathing in asbestos, as well as the legality of exposure, is a very real concern. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer related to asbestos exposure. Workers and officials alike are not willing to take the risk of exposure to anyone involved, and have begun making plans to redirect students in the upcoming school year.
