Class may be a little late for one New Jersey school after asbestos was found during maintenance. All work has stopped on the site and the elementary school may not be open in September for classes.

Bayonne Elementary was looking forward to opening their doors this school year a renovated school. Instead, the school may not be opening their doors at all after asbestos-insulated pipe was found during the work. After the material tested positive as asbestos, all work was halted and the EPA was brought in to test the area. Until the school has been deemed safe, work cannot resume and classes cannot begin.

Asbestos is a normally stable material, only becoming dangerous if it is disturbed or starts decomposing. Once the material breaks down into airborne fibers, asbestos can become life threatening, the cause of the cease-work this week. Asbestos fibers can be breathed in, becoming lodged in the lungs and killing the tissue there. As a result, the tissue in surrounding areas of the lungs cannot absorb oxygen and begins to die as well; this condition is a type of cancer called mesothelioma. Once detected, mesothelioma is normally too advanced for treatment, resulting in a slow death for the victim.
