The Department of Defense has given a New York firm a unique asbestos project. The project includes a new process of abatement for the potentially hazardous material, which eliminates the danger of exposure during transportation.
The Department of Defense awarded A-Conversion, LLC a contract to construct a transportable asbestos conversion system for field deployment. The New York based company will use the ABCOV Method, a non-thermal conversion process that makes transportation of the unstable material safer. The Pentagon’s Contracting Command of Excellence gave the $1.27 million contract to the company under agreement that the planning of the unit will begin before the end of this year.
The mobile asbestos unit will convert potentially hazardous asbestos into a stable material through an EPA approved chemical-mechanical process. The new method will reduce the possibility of exposure as asbestos is moved into and out of areas, as well as eliminating the Government’s landfill liability. The EPA declared in the 1970’s that asbestos exposure can be dangerous, and the government banned using the material in the mid 80’s. Asbestos can still be found in older items, such as buildings, and can be hazardous if disturbed. The material can also still be imported, and as such a safer way to handle the material was needed.
