The collapse of a Pennsylvania building spanning three blocks has raised concern over the possibility of asbestos exposure. The roof, walls and façade collapsed this weekend, sending asbestos dust into the surrounding area.
Newport Township has a new concern over an abandoned building in downtown; the building, which spans three blocks, collapsed over the weekend. The building’s façade, walls and roof were part of the collapse, areas of the building that are known to contain asbestos. The collapse of the building has raised concern from neighboring residents, since dust and debris are still present.
The old VFW building is located on the main street in the Pennsylvania town. Part of the building collapsed into the road, closing off a section of it. The building was scheduled for demolition this fall, but will now be expedited due to the hazardous conditions. Asbestos air tests will be conducted at the site, and work will begin to demolish the rest of the building when the area has been declared safe. In a twist to the story, the building was awaiting asbestos inspections when it collapsed. Airborne asbestos fibers can cause a variety of diseases, including mesothelioma, emphysema and asbestosis, making the testing a necessity as soon as possible.
