A school union has become involved in a case where maintenance workers were exposed to asbestos. Roof work on the school dislodged pieces of the potentially hazardous material.
Accident reports were filed and chest x-rays were completed for a dozen maintenance workers at two middle schools after roofing debris exposed them to asbestos. The asbestos settled on the gym floor, and caused the workers to rush to the hospital for possible problems due to the exposure. The union got involved, citing that the workers were not informed that the roofing material was hazardous, putting the employees in unnecessary danger.
The workers are now waiting to hear back on test results, hoping that the bureaucratic misstep will not stay with them the rest of their lives. Officials from the school district feel they took all necessary precautions when the asbestos debris began to fall from the two schools’ roofs. Air test conducted at the sites came back negative, negating the need for disclosing the asbestos in the area. Work was halted and the schools’ ventilation systems were shut down after the asbestos was disturbed; work will not resume until test results come back and clears the sites of any danger.
