Summer is winding to a close, and schools that are seeking to get asbestos removed from buildings are scrambling to get the job done before school starts in August. An Indiana school is hoping to get abatement completed as soon as possible.
A reconstruction and abatement contract in Indiana was on the table for months without any bids until this past week when it was sold for more than $51,000. The school had offered the contract before the end of last school year in hopes that the job would be completed before the end of summer. Due to the delay in contracting a company for the job, asbestos removal alone may not be completed before school resumes in August and the job may not be completed until October.
Hebron High School was to be demolished and rebuilt for the 2006-07 school year, but was put on hold when testing reported that asbestos was present. More testing concluded that abatement would be needed; demolition cannot take place until the building is cleared of the hazardous material. The abatement will take about two weeks, demolition would take another month and reconstruction can start. Students will continue to go to the school by means of portable classrooms and will not be affected by the noise since the old school walls will remain in place until the end.
