Britain leads the way as one of the countries most affected by asbestos-related diseases. It is estimated that one in five people there have some sort of disease or disorder linked to the deadly material and talks are now in session for government help to asbestos victims.
The House of Commons in England will hear debates this week over the issue of providing relief to asbestos victims, specifically mesothelioma sufferers. Amendments to the Compensation bill will be debated by MPs, in response to a potential reversal of the Barker v. Corus judgment. The outcome of the Bill could potentially increase the time that victims will have to wait for financial help, a possible death sentence for some of the more advanced victims.
The amendments are being presented in an effort to reverse the Bill, making compensation and assistance easier and quicker for the victims as any party responsible for exposing the victim to asbestos would be ordered to pay full compensation in a timely manner. The victim could seek damages from other responsible parties and receive additional payouts from them; a large difference from the Bill that proposes that only one payout can be received from only one institution. Britain has one of the largest percentages of populace affected by asbestos.
