India Uses Asbestos Despite Ban

Though the Indian government has banned mining of asbestos, the country continues to collect the hazardous substance. Though the mines may not be active, importation of the material is on the rise.

When studying occupational hazards connected with asbestos mining in India, a Canadian activist reported that the country is still importing the dangerous material. Mining of asbestos in India may still be going on illegally in the third world country, potentially putting thousands of people at risk each year. The Indian shipyards have long been a problem area since they are one of a few ports that will still demolish asbestos-laden ship.

Handling asbestos over long periods of time can lead to many different diseases, including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma. The material is normally stable until it is disturbed, when fibers can brake off and be inhaled. The fibers become lodged in the lungs, causing tissue to die from lack of oxygen, leading to a cancer of the lungs called mesothelioma. India is especially at danger, considering the frequency with which the material is handled and the loose laws surrounding the material. Though the Indian government banned all mining of asbestos, importing and exporting are still allowed and loosely regulated, compounding an already growing problem.
