A future hike-and-bike site in Texas has tested positive for large amounts of asbestos, causing concern for the community and a hold in plans going forward.
The King William District of Texas may have to wait for a hike-and-bike trail that had been started for the community. After a suspicious material was found, the EPA tested the site and found a large amount of asbestos, causing work to halt on the project. A test had been conducted earlier on the area, considering that it was the site of an old manufacturing plant, and no evidence of asbestos had been found. But when material was disturbed in early construction, the EPA found that 20 out of 24 sites tested were positive.
Asbestos is not a hazard when it is left alone; however, if disrupted, the material becomes a health concern due to airborne fibers. Workers on the site have already been exposed to the fibers, a needless hazard that could have been avoided with proper testing.
Though some residents want the work to stop for good, area officials have proposed a clean up plan for the area that would include abatement. Until the site tests clean, no further work will be permitted.
