An historic power plant in North Carolina may be avoiding demolition. Kinston officials say that abatement bids have come in lower than expected, making the asbestos removal a real possibility for the interesting building.

An old power plant in downtown Kinston, NC may be getting a new lease on life. The building, which contains large amounts of asbestos, was in consideration for abatement to preserve the unique architectural status of the building. After preliminary research showed that abatement could cost many millions of dollars, the city was looking toward demolition as an answer. But residents in the area urged officials to accept bids on the work anyway, hoping that the plant would be preserved.

Ten bids were received, ranging from about $350,000 to a little more than $1.5 million, much less than had been expected. The city is now considering the bids and checking resources on the companies that bid, giving the city hope that the building may stay. Though city officials have not given a definitive answer, they are optimistic that the landmark may stay in Kinston for centuries longer. The benefits of abatement are strong debates for preserving the plant, considering that if something were to happen, such as fire or storm damage, the asbestos threat to residents would no longer be an issue.
