A group of schools in Colorado that had levels of asbestos detected during renovations have received nearly $1 million worth of asbestos removal. The budget for the removal has now almost doubled from its original numbers.

One CO school district got a hefty surprise when they approved asbestos removal from two schools. The budget of $400,000 has now been exceeded, with the total bill coming to almost $1 million. Glenwood Springs High School ’s abatement is costing the school district $750,000, the majority of the cost involved. The bill for the high school is larger than expected due to the fact that the entire school is being demolished and rebuilt, and buildings in the area that need to be demolished also contain asbestos.

An elementary school in the area is costing the county almost $200,000, nearly doubled than the proposed amount. Money that was saved from a different elementary school in the area will be applied to the surprising bill. The school district was concerned about the asbestos to such a degree that the soil beneath the afflicted schools were tested; if it had tested positive, the county would have paid for the soil’s abatement as well. With safety being everyone’s number one concern, even a doubled budget won’t be a cause to cut corners.
