Under new legislation passed March 20th, victims of asbestos-related diseases and their families will be entitled to relief from the government. Since the legislation, more than 4,000 people have applied for help.

After a March 20th legislation was passed in Japan, more than 4,000 people have applied for government help for their asbestos-related conditions. Many of those that have applied live near plants that produced asbestos or used it in daily production. More than 300 people have been approved for allowances for medical treatment, or condolence stipends for deceased loved ones.

The law is for those who were struck with mesothelioma and other cancers as a result of asbestos exposure, while providing money for victims’ families if the afflicted party has already passed away. The law was meant to cover those not already assisted by workers’ accident compensation insurance. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lung that results from prolonged exposure to asbestos. Fibers from the material lodge in the lung lining, prohibiting it from obtaining oxygen and dying. The surrounding tissue is left without oxygen, which spreads the disease, in effect suffocating the victim. Mesothelioma can often take decades to manifest, and is usually untreatable at time of detection.
