A Denver apartment building is refunding more than 300 renters after the building was evacuated last month. They will get not only their rent refunded, but will receive their security deposit back as well.

An agreement was reached on Saturday between more than 300 tenants and the Highline Terrace apartment building after asbestos forced them out of their homes. Lawyers agreed to a deal returning the rent and security deposits for all involved, while the tenants will be able to move back in after abatement has been completed. Some residents feel it is too little too late, since they have found other places to live. Asbestos was found after a construction company repairing the building reported the material.

Asbestos exposure can lead to an array of diseases, including emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma. A cancer of the lung lining, mesothelioma often goes undiagnosed for years, only to surface when the disease is in its final stages and incurable. Disturbed asbestos fibers work into the lining of the lung, prohibiting it from absorbing oxygen. The surrounding tissue dies as a result of the lack of oxygen, thus spreading through the lungs. Victims face a slow suffocation due to the exposure, a situation that is causing concern among the residents.
