Missouri Construction Site Riddle With Asbestos

A demolition site in Kansas City was under fire due to asbestos concerns. But when tests came back, the extent of the issue was worse than had been expected. Responsibility and ramifications are now being considered.

Citadel Plaza was supposed to be the center of a redevelopment project in Kansas City. But when the demolition company failed to test for asbestos prior to beginning, the city shut the project down. Further testing has revealed that the entire site is laden with asbestos, though in low levels. The city is now calling for the demolition company to begin abatement, a project that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Preliminary treatment has begun with water trucks dowsing the area so that levels of asbestos will go no higher.

Community Development Corp., the company hired to begin the redevelopment, maintains that they have done no wrong, stressing that they were not told the area had to be tested for asbestos prior to leveling the area. Contracts and notices to the company, however, show that it was CDC’s responsibility to test for the potentially hazardous material. It will now be up to CDC to have the asbestos cleaned by a certified abatement company before work can resume on the project.
