Asbestos Ban Gets Tough

The world has known that asbestos is dangerous since the 1970s, implementing bans on using the product since the 80s. The part of the world that still has use for the fibrous material is now considering harsh bans, eyeing September for the release date.

The United States banned using asbestos in the early 1980’s, but still allowed the import of the material into the States. What was good for business was not good for health, and now other countries are looking to totally ban the material. Britain is the latest to review their stance on asbestos, a material that, as it breaks down, can cause serious health problems to those exposed. The plan was already set to start in 2008, but the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has decided to bump the date up to September of 2006.

Exposure to asbestos, especially over long periods of time, can lead to a slew of health problems, including cancer, emphysema and mesothelioma. The diseases normally start after prolonged exposure, and can take years or decades to manifest. With mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung tissue, the diagnosis can come so late in the game that more than 80% of victims die as a result of the cancer.
