Thousands of workers who in and around the World Trade Center ground zero site in New York are still experiencing health problems, nearly 5 years after the terrorist attack. Unfortunately for one New York City police detective, the health problems became fatal. James Zadroga was only 34 years old when he passed away from inhaled asbestos dust.

Zadroga's death is the first linked by an autopsy to toxins at the site and has prompeted polititians and union leaders to call for more aid and investigation.  Hilary Clinton has pushed to have Ground Zero rescue and cleanup workers to be added to the $140 billion Asbestos Fund Bill that the U.S. Senate is planning.  Under this bill, 9/11 workers will be entitled to making a claim to receive compensation from the bill.

There is a major concern is the emergence in first responders of rare lung-scarring diseases that could also be fatal. Asbestos is known to cause Asbestosis, Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma.  Asbestosis is the scarring of the lung tissue.  Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by asbestos and can develop in the lungs, heart and stomach.  It is estimated that 1 million tons of asbestos dust rained down on the city and the 16-acre disaster zone.
