The report was made more than two weeks ago that dangerous asbestos had been dumped in the children’s park. The Burnley Borough Council finally removed the waste, citing they have only known about the problem for two days.
A popular site in Hapton, the Children’s Green car park borders the Mill Hill picnic area and is host to families year round. The park is a lush area where families, couples and nature enthusiast can go for relaxation and fun. But a concerned member of the community noticed that what looked like asbestos cement had been dumped on the site and reported the dumping to the Burnley Borough Council on May 8th.
Two weeks later, the council has finally removed the cement, which has been verified to contain asbestos. Children, families and others had not been barred from the area during the two-week time span. The council defends their actions, stating that they received verification from the hired consultancy unit on Tuesday. Wednesday a crew was sent out to clean up the area, making the turn time 24 hours according to them. The people of the community, however, see it as a gross mishandling and a possible health hazard. The people responsible for the dumping have not yet been caught.
