A Lawrence high school will not be reopened until air quality test results come back. The tests were ordered after small amounts of asbestos were found in the school earlier in the week.

The air quality test results are scheduled back today, which will decide if the school will be open for next week. No contamination was found outside the afflicted area, which includes the former kitchen and cafeteria. Asbestos was found in the area during renovations in order to make the area into a practice suite for the band, but has not been detected elsewhere. The exposure came after insulated ducts were disturbed, though the crew had believed they removed all asbestos-containing material prior to the work being done.

The area was cleaned on Thursday by a specialty crew and was sealed off. Air and surface tests were performed after the cleaning; if test come back positive for asbestos then the abatement crew will conduct additional cleaning and testing over the weekend. The school year has been extended by one day so far, bumping graduation to June 19th. The school year may be extended more according to the results, though the superintendent does not believe this will be necessary.
