Many Scramble for Asbestos Removal

School is coming to a close for the summer across the nation. At this time, asbestos abatement companies are vying for licenses for work while children are home. The scramble has led to a nationwide backlog of abatement licenses.

Some states’ Departments of Public Health are experiencing a two month backlog for renewing abatement licenses as the summer months approach. When students are out, schools see an opportunity to have asbestos removed while assuring the safety of children. Normal turn time for a license renewal is 7-10 days, but the recent rush for renewal has created a mountain of submissions.

The year of 2006 saw license renewal move to a mail-in application, as opposed to walking into a health department and filling out the forms. Ways of speeding up the renewal process are being heard, but until that time workers can still practice under expired licenses as long as they have completed the process to renew. Other licenses, such as public pool and beach permits, have been delayed as the warmer months have come around. But with media attention turning to asbestos exposure, abatement licenses are still the most backlogged permit renewal request.
