Eight defendants were found guilty this week in an asbestos lawsuit brought forth by a Louisiana piping worker. The man contracted a fatal form of lung cancer while working with asbestos on the job. A former pipe fitter and welder was awarded more than $3 million this week during his asbestos litigation. The man was exposed to asbestos while working as a contractor completing piping jobs for many companied. Since 1965, the worker had routinely handled asbestos without any form of training or safety measures. The judgment was held against eight companies that manufactured items used by the worker, or companies that contracted the man. In September of 2005, the worker was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of deadly lung cancer. Mesothelioma is one of the only respiratory illnesses that can be directly linked with asbestos exposure. When asbestos is mishandled, the material breaks into airborne fibers that can be inhaled. The asbestos fibers become lodged in the lungs, keeping the tissue from absorbing oxygen and slowly suffocating the victim. Though the worker retired in 1996, he was not diagnosed with mesothelioma until late in 2005 due to the fact that this type of cancer can lay dormant for decades.
