Asbestos cleanup is expected to begin later this month on an abandoned hospital in Cairo, Illinois. The abatement will be conducted, and paid for, by the Environmental Protection Agency. The frayed and brittle asbestos in the Southern Medical Center in Cairo, Illinois, is about to be remedied. The hospital has been abandoned since 1996, but no moves were taken to tear down or renovate the building until the Environmental Protection Agency was called in. When the condition of the asbestos was observed by officials, it was decided that the EPA would not only complete the abatement, but that they would fund the work for the government-backed Superfund which can be used for government buildings. The EPA decided that the asbestos was enough of a hazard to qualify for the funding. Since the asbestos has begun to break down, the hospital poses a real health threat to the public. Decayed asbestos can break into particles that become airborne. The particles become lodged in the lungs, keeping the tissue from absorbing oxygen. The result is asbestosis, emphysema or mesothelioma, all asbestos-related illnesses. One of the deadliest results of asbestos exposure, mesothelioma is a form of dormant cancer that can takes decades to be diagnosed, but often claims the victim’s life within a year of discovery.
