Asbestos Found on IL Great Lake Beaches

Most asbestos exposure occurs in the workplace, with machinist and contractors making up a large part. But the newest way of being exposed to asbestos is even easier; just go to the beach.

Large sheets of asbestos sheeting and piping are being found on stretches of Illinois beaches, according to an environmental watchdog. The Department of Natural Resources counters that the issue has been resolved, and that the asbestos has been effectively removed from the area. An area of beach near Zion has seen asbestos washing up on shore since the mid 1990s, with a large portion of it in the Illinois Beach Sate Park.

The most recent wave of asbestos activity has prompted the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society to take a stand. The group has filed a complaint with the state attorney general’s office demanding that the situation be handled promptly. The president of the group is also requesting that the Illinois chapter of the EPA be called in to begin an investigation into the asbestos wash. A nearby housing development is being demolished in the area, a situation that has been blamed for the new wave of asbestos. It is assumed that asbestos released from the site is blowing into the water, then up on the beach.
