The budget for proposed renovations to a Texas courthouse took into account that some unexpected charges would occur. But when asbestos was found, worked had to pause until more funds could be found. In order to safely remove dangerous asbestos, abatement has to be carried out by licensed professionals that will prep and seal the area, then safely and legally dispose of the hazardous material. With all that work comes a large bill, which a commissioner in Texas is finding out. Though the budget for renovations at a Texas courthouse included a little room for errors and the unexpected, asbestos abatement can cost upwards of $20,000 per issue. Since four separate areas of the courthouse are affected, the total bill for the abatement will run about $80,000 - $5,000 more than budgeted for unseen expenses. Though the cost is high, the cost of not using licensed professionals for abatement is even higher. If asbestos is mishandled or improperly disposed of, the public could be at risk. The company contracting the work could faces fines, or even prison sentences. The mishandling of asbestos can result in the material becoming airborne, when it can be inhaled into the lungs. Asbestos exposure can result in asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer.
