After years of working in the tunnels below Washington D.C., ten workers were reassigned to other positions. Known as tunnel rats, these workers were relocated due to the asbestos present in the tunnels.
Ten men were reassigned from working in the utility tunnels beneath the nation’s capitol this week after consulting with independent physicians. Though official records show the men to be healthy, nine of the ten “tunnel rats” showed evidence of asbestos in their lungs after they consulted independent doctors. When the new test results were made known to local officials, the ten men were reassigned. Most of the men have been told they will be going to a power plant, which is also undergoing a seven-month asbestos abatement plan.
