Asbestos Exposure Leads to Job Reassignment

After years of working in the tunnels below Washington D.C., ten workers were reassigned to other positions. Known as tunnel rats, these workers were relocated due to the asbestos present in the tunnels.

Ten men were reassigned from working in the utility tunnels beneath the nation’s capitol this week after consulting with independent physicians. Though official records show the men to be healthy, nine of the ten “tunnel rats” showed evidence of asbestos in their lungs after they consulted independent doctors. When the new test results were made known to local officials, the ten men were reassigned. Most of the men have been told they will be going to a power plant, which is also undergoing a seven-month asbestos abatement plan.

The utility tunnels beneath Washington D.C. have been in the middle of much controversy in the past year after dangerously high levels of asbestos were found. The tunnels, which supply water and steam to most of the Capitol’s buildings, are in a state of decay and large amounts of asbestos can be found. Tunnel workers, or “rats,” have asked for protective gear to keep them safe from asbestos-related diseases like asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma. The most deadly of the illnesses, mesothelioma, is a type of lung cancer that can take decades to manifest and is usually terminal at the time of detection.
