The newest victim of asbestos is no stranger to asbestos litigation. Motor mogul General Motors Corp. has filed suit in the UK has filed suit due relating to asbestos and the damages it does to the environment.
In a move that may seem a bit ironic, General Motor Corp. has filed suit against Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group. The group, the UK’s second largest property and casualty insurer, revealed that the suit involves asbestos and environmental pollution claims. The suit falls under an umbrella of lawsuits going on in the US at this time, but the world’s largest automaker has made a surprise move in joining the suing club.
A spokesman for Royal & Sun has stated that, while the claim is largely unfounded, it is only one part of a bigger movement in the US to file suit against the insurance company. The problems started over three years ago, with GM accusing that Royal & Sun dodged millions of dollars in asbestos-related claims brought against the car company; some of the claims are more than 30 years old. The relationship between Royal & Sun and GM ended in the early 1990s, when both parties signed a program-closure agreement.
