A demolished shopping center in Philadelphia posed more than just an eye sore when it was found that the building contained asbestos. While officials are saying that the material is safe, neighbors are concerned about the hazard. A Tullytown shopping center was torn down to make way for a bigger, more modern building in order to prevent the eyesore from falling down. But after the building was demolished, asbestos was found on the site. Officials conducted air and quality samples on the asbestos, and reported that the type of material was nonfriable. Nonfriable asbestos is considered stable, and is lees likely to break into airborne particles. The concern now is whether the substance is a byproduct of the demolition, or was illegally dumped there once the building was torn down. Asbestos does not usually pose a threat to the public, especially if it is deemed nonfriable. When asbestos is disturbed, or begins to break down, friable asbestos can break into airborne particles that can be breathed in. Inhaling asbestos can lead to emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a deadly form of lung cancer. Though the asbestos found is considered safe, it would be a concern if someone were illegally disposing of the material in a public place.
