Plumber Frustrated Over Asbestos

A New York pipe fitter is frustrated that the asbestos he finds on the job is not taken care of after he reports it. He is even more frustrated that the asbestos is in public schools. So far, a New York Pipe fitter has reported that seven local schools and one Department of Education office has asbestos problems. While replacing and checking piping in the buildings, the plumber has seen exposed asbestos. County officials say that the asbestos is not a concern, and is not in a dangerous state. The worker is concerned that out of the eight buildings where he reported exposed asbestos, only one has responded. He has been warned that to keep reporting the asbestos could result in the loss of his county-held position. The workers concern is very real, considering that damaged, exposed asbestos can be deadly. Normally asbestos is a safe material that was often used as a form of insulation and fire protection. As asbestos ages, it can begin to break apart during its decay. If the asbestos is disturbed, the fibers can become airborne and can be inhaled. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to respiratory illnesses like emphysema and mesothelioma. A type of deadly lung cancer, mesothelioma can take years or decades to be diagnosed.
