The people of El Dorado Hills, California are trying to live with asbestos. The form of asbestos they have to accept is a naturally occurring form that leaves them two choices; put up with it or move. When most of the families in the El Dorado Hills moved into the large, spacious homes, many of them were not aware that a potentially lethal danger was below the ground. Naturally occurring asbestos was an issue acknowledged in the 1980s, and which has been monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency since the 1990s. Though natural asbestos is usually not a danger, everyday wear on parks, parking lots and playgrounds can cause a health concern. Since the asbestos is everywhere, residents can either live with the asbestos, or move. On dry, windy days, many residents chose to stay indoors, keeping their children from going outside to play and minimizing the amount of time they spend outdoors. Asbestos is only dangerous when it is disturbed and becomes airborne, when the fibers can be inhaled. Residents in the area have complained of respiratory illnesses that can be caused by asbestos exposure. Breathing asbestos particles can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer.
