Residents of Marco Island allege that local authorities did not completely investigate the presence of asbestos in a public lot. Residents feel that the asbestos was planted there, though officials say it is a product of industrial storage. The residents on Marco Island are asking for a federal investigation to take place over asbestos found on a public lot. After a private contractor was hired to remove the asbestos from a future park, residents raised questions over an investigation conducted by local authorities, saying that the reports covered up the truth of the hazardous material. Officials have said that the asbestos, which was a potential public safety concern, was the remnants of industrial machines that were stored at the site. Locals, however, think that there is a possibility that the asbestos was planted on the lot. The concern of exposure from the lot is real, considering that it has already undergone three separate abatements. After each abatement, or removal, more asbestos is found and poses a larger threat. The material can become airborne fibers that can be breathed in if the substance is disturbed. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer, and emphysema.
