Parts of a hotel in Central Park South has been closed due to a small amount of asbestos found in the basement. The hazardous material is to be cleared, and the hotel is expecting a quick reopening.

The luxury hotel in Central Park South has padlocked their basement door in response to finding a small amount of asbestos in the area. The Helmsley Park Lane Hotel’s laundry room is off limits to patrons and employees alike until the situation can be remedied. The high-end hotel has agreed to remove and decontaminate linens; robes and towels that have had contact with the laundry room after an arbitration document requested the action.

The International Union for hotel workers are satisfied at the actions taken by the hotel, and there seems to be no plans to close the entire building down in response to the “small level” of asbestos found. Medical testing for employees was requested and the hotel agreed to pay for the testing for those employees exposed. The room has been closed off for about seven weeks while contractors are bidding on the abatement job, with a decision scheduled for the end of May. No legal action has been taken against the hotel at this time.
