Exposed asbestos at a work site near Cheyenne, Wyoming is drawing criticism from residents in the area. Though health officials have said that the asbestos poses no danger, those living close to the site want more answers. Construction materials dumped on a lot just north of Cheyenne, Wyoming is coming under fire as one government agency has decided to do no more than seal the dangerous materials there. The construction debris includes hazardous asbestos, which, when disturbed, can create a public health concern. Authorities have stated that the asbestos present poses no threat in the condition that it is in, and that by sealing the area, further complications can be avoided. Owners of the lot say they are doing nothing wrong by keeping the asbestos buried on the private property. Asbestos is only dangerous when it is disturbed and breaks into airborne pieces. The fibers can be inhaled, lodging in the lungs and causing respiratory illnesses. Emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma have all been linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer, is one of the only conditions that can be directly linked to asbestos exposure, and can take decades to manifest.
