A North Carolina city has started accepting bids for the abatement of an asbestos-laden power plant in Kinston . While officials are hopeful, they realize that the price could halt the removal.
A decommissioned power plant in Kinston may be entering abatement, if the price is right. The plant, which produced power for the city until the 1970s, has been closed and sealed for years, but recent health concerns from citizens forced the city to begin accepting bids for the abatement of asbestos in the building. The bids are expected to be between a few hundred thousand to over $1 million. Officials have already acknowledged that the price will be indicative of the actual outcome.
Asbestos in the building can be found in several sealed rooms, although the material is largely loose making it dangerous. The building was first constructed in the late 1800s, but is in good condition and offers interesting architecture. Unless the plant becomes imminently dangerous, officials hope to save the building for possible future use. Bids will tentatively begin the middle of June, and will determine if any future work is possible. If the bids are in the low six figures work will be discussed, while if bids begin to hit the seven figures range work will be put aside for future discussion.
