New studies on residents near two plants that made asbestos products in Utah revealed that people living near the area were twice as likely to develop cancer as those that do not live close to the plants. People living within a two mile radius of a couple of asbestos plants in Utah are twice as likely to develop cancer, a new study proposed. For residents within the radius of the vermiculite plants, people were twice as likely to develop cancer than other residents of the state. Surprisingly, however, people in that radius had only half the amount of msothelioma cases when compared to the state average. Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer that has been directly linked with asbestos exposure. The studies did not look at workers of the plants, but rather radian circles of residents in the area. Both plants stopped mining and refining asbestos in the 1980s, when links to mesothelioma were first put to the government. Though mesothelioma cases were below the national average for local residents, other cases of respiratory cancer were twice that of the state average. Health officials for the county and state are trying to locate former employees of the plants to study the direct affect of the asbestos on people handling the dangerous substance.
