Residents in a Pennsylvania borough are angry that a government agency issued fines for violating an asbestos law, but did not inform those around the dangerous work site that anything was wrong. Residents of a senior housing project and school officials from a private elementary school are angry over asbestos. A local demolition project that was next to the housing and school was undergoing renovations in 2002. Contractors and the building owner were cited by an agency for violating the Clean Air Act, a law against exposing the public to deadly asbestos. Though the violations were paid, no one in the area was informed that the toxic material was left in local dumpsters and hanging exposed from the building for a period of weeks. People in the area have every right to be outraged, since asbestos exposure can lead to many different types of respiratory illnesses. Emphysema and mesothelioma, along with asbestosis, are the most comment diseases linked with asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma and emphysema can both take decades to reveal themselves, and are usually terminal at the time of detection. An investigation is being proposed against the agency since thorough testing was not completed on adjacent buildings, and the agency never disclosed the public might have been at risk.
