Nevada Building Holds Asbestos Danger

Buildings along the Stateline in Nevada have been receiving extra attention in the days before demolition will occur. The old buildings are known to contain asbestos, and must be handled carefully because of it. A redevelopment area on the state line of Nevada is getting special attention in the days leading up to demolition. The buildings slated for removal are known to contain asbestos, a material that can lead to respiratory diseases if mishandled. The Southwest division of the Environmental Protection Agency has monitored the work being done, and agrees that all precautions have been taken. The buildings have been sealed in order to prevent the deadly material from becoming airborne, and only licensed workers will be removing the hazardous substance. Residents surrounding the area were concerned when abatement, or removal, of asbestos had been factored in to the costs of the demolition. Asbestos is only a concern if it becomes airborne, where particles of the material can be breathed. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, each a respiratory disease that can take years to develop and are often times deadly. People in the area of the state line were reassured that the work being done is monitored, and that there is no threat to the public.
