After a major mining company was found at fault of exposing miners and employees, as well as local residents, to airborne asbestos, a pledge was given to a local hospital that helps treats victims of mesothelioma. This week, another donation of $250,000 was given to St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in Libby, Montana to assist with the treatment and sustenance of asbestos victims. Since the pledge was given in 2000, the company has donated more than $2 million to the local hospital to assist the people affected by the company’s byproduct. Airborne asbestos can cause many forms of respiratory diseases, including a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Exposure can also result in asbestosis and emphysema, although only mesothelioma is exclusively attributed to asbestos exposure. All three diseases can take years or decades to manifest, and are usually in the final stages when diagnosed. The funds for the hospital are not only used to treat victims, but also for research that may extend the life expectancy for victims. When diagnosed with mesothelioma, most victims only have months left to live.
