A long battle has ensued over victims of asbestos exposure in Scotland . Some patients that need care go without in order to assure that their families are taken care of after they die.

Compensation laws in Scotland are under review of the deputy justice minister in order to ensure that victims of asbestos-related cancer, and their families, are getting fair treatment. The battle was a result of many mesothelioma sufferers going without treatment in order to ensure that their families would be provided for after they die. An equitable solution was called for after the minister met with victims of the deadly cancer.

Mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, is directly related to asbestos exposure. Those who have long term exposure to asbestos often develop the disease due to asbestos inhalation. The fibers are breathed in after being disturbed, and attach to the lining of the lungs. The result is that the lung lining cannot absorb oxygen, and the tissue begins to die. The disease spreads, and the result is a slow death sentence by suffocation. Victims are often diagnosed years after the disease has taken hold, making it one of the most deadly forms of cancer, and one of the hardest to treat.
