A veterans hospital in Virginia is getting a face lift after more than 40,000 square feet of asbestos tile was found to be crumbling in the building. The discovery led to investigations at other VA hospitals in the area. Over the next year, a Veterans hospital in Virginia will get $600,000 worth of renovations done to the main building. The rush and concern happened when tiles and sealant in the building started crumbling, and the materials were found to contain deadly asbestos. Though the hospital has other minor issues, the asbestos is the main concern not only in the hospital on hand, but also at a VA hospital in Richmond. The discoveries led state and government officials to investigate other veteran’s hospitals in the area, where more asbestos was found. Though hospital officials said the degeneration is part of normal wear and tear, the asbestos tiles are beginning to get scuffed, which can release particles of the deadly material into the air. Airborne asbestos can cause emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer affiliated with asbestos exposure. For veterans already suffering other injuries and diseases, terminal mesothelioma is a problem that can be prevented.
