County Asbestos Trouble Almost Over

After Cayuga County, New York went through so many asbestos issues in their government buildings, officials decided to bring in an independent company to conduct environmental safety surveys to confirm that the buildings are now safe. Surveys being conducted by a team of specialists are almost complete in the Cayuga County government buildings. The independent consultants were brought in after many problems involving asbestos at the Board of Elections building late in 2006. The company has only identified one danger so far, in the Vitale Building, and that is just a matter of undisturbed asbestos insulation that poses no threat to workers or the public. The Board of Elections building became an issue when it was accused that a county worker instructed inmates to remove a material he said was fiberglass without protective gear. The material was actually asbestos, which was later dumped in a public place by orders of the worker. After the scene blew over, county officials decided to bring in the consultants to prove there was no further danger of asbestos exposure. Disturbing asbestos can cause the material to break apart and particles of the substance can be inhaled. Breathing in asbestos can lead to emphysema and mesothelioma, which are often times terminal when diagnosed.
