Disappearing Asbestos in SC Investigated

When a historical cabin was torn down in Swansea, North Carolina, some residents were relieved. The cabin had been a point of concern after it was found to contain asbestos. The cabin was finally torn down when the asbestos disappeared. The ancient Swansea Community Center, a century-old cabin located in the quiet southern town, was under hot debate as to whether it should be rebuilt or demolished. Demolition was put on hold when the cabin was found to contain deadly asbestos in many different parts of the decrepit building. But when the asbestos disappeared, the cabin was leveled and only a few people wondered where the asbestos went. This week, residents think they have a good idea of where the deadly material was dumped after authorities descended on a private landfill. Removing and disposing asbestos improperly can lead to many health issues for the public. Removing, then dumping, unsealed asbestos can release particles of the material into the air where it can be inhaled. Breathing in asbestos particles can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a type of deadly lung cancer. Though city officials will not discuss why they were tearing up the landfill, residents were already guessing the issue when dozens of officers were found digging in the garbage.
