Many CO residents were evacuated from their apartment buildings because of asbestos contamination. Several residents have been able to retrieve some of their personal belongings, but they have to wear protective asbestos gear to do so. Evacuation of the apartment building was requested by the Colorado Deptartment of Public Health and Environment.

Asbestos was detected in the building at 10 times the allowable level.  Officials believe the asbestos was release by a basement fire that occurred on Monday.  All the residents will be displaced up to 3 weeks as the asbestos is removed.  Many of the Colorado residents are frustrated with the apartment buildings lack of communication.  Several residents witnessed building management hauling items out of the building hours before tennants were notified of the asbestos contamination.

Fortunately, building management has stated that all residents will be reimbursed for May rent.  Some residents have stated that they will not move back into the building even after the asbestos removal.  Management also said that they hope to reimburse residents for their living situation should the asbestos removal take more than 3 weeks.
