A California building owner is responsible for almost $150,000 in fines after asbestos was illegally removed from his site. The man hired unlicensed contractors to remove the deadly material, putting workers at risk of exposure. A contracting company in California was hired by a local building owner to remove asbestos from his property. The contractor used unlicensed workers to complete the work, and the building owner is now facing a $149,000 fine for hiring the company to do the hazardous work. While the asbestos was being removed, the unknowing employees were repeatedly exposed to the deadly substance. The Environmental Protection Agency is also fining the contracting company $1,500 for exposing the workers to asbestos, and for illegally disposing of the material. Asbestos exposure can lead to many different types of respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma and emphysema, along with various others. Both emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, can take years to be diagnosed, making the terminal rate much higher for those diseases. The renovation was completed in 2000, and as of yet, no workers have come forward with asbestos-related problems. The building was properly cleaned, and was sold to another owner in 2005.
