Salinas Asbestos Affects Another Company

The Salinas County Courthouse has been a hotbed of activity when it comes to asbestos and asbestos removal. A half dozen companies and contractors have quit the renovation project amid asbestos allegations. The latest casualty of the Salinas County Courthouse asbestos fiasco is the construction management company Skanska USA Building, the company that took over for another contracting company in early 2006. The company stepped in to oversee asbestos handling amid the renovations being conducted on the courthouse after the previous company indicated that they could not assure the safe removal of the dangerous material in the time frame indicated by county officials. The Salinas Courthouse has had problems with asbestos over the last few years when the renovation project began. Five employees have begun lawsuits over asbestos exposure within the building, resulting from mishandling the substance by a separate contractor. The employees, including a judge, have all begun to display respiratory weakness, which can be the beginning stages of emphysema or mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer, resulting from the exposure. Both emphysema and mesothelioma can take years to manifest, and are usually untreatable when detected.
